What lies beneath used to be the concern of A-list Hollywood
actors and avid H.P Lovecraft readers. But, in 2017 the question of what lies
beneath is more of a concern for property developers and homeowners in London.
The number of basement conversions in London has seen an
exponential increase as competition for space above ground grows. But what,
exactly, are homeowners using their basements for and why are they so popular?
Media Rooms
Media rooms serve as spaces, typically around a home cinema
system or large television screen where people are able to relax and enjoy
sporting events, films or their favourite televisions series in comfort.
Swimming Pools
Recent technological and structural advancements have meant
that basement swimming pools are now more affordable to own and maintain than
ever. As such, they’ve seen enormous interest from London homeowners looking to
relax, or exercise in the comfort of their very own pool. Purification
technology improvements have also paved the way for virtually chlorine free
water.
Of course, the added attractive of a basement swimming pool
is their allure to guests and potential house buyers. Most homeowners that opt
to build a pool underneath the existing property tend to complement their
development with full spa or steam room to create an incredible, tranquil
space.
Nightclubs
Manchester City footballer, Samir
Nasri’s 5.7m Cheshire mansion went up for grabs recently, following his
loan move to Sevilla. His home comes complete with an incredible basement
nightclub. One could argue that competition for space is far less in Cheshire compared
to London and you’d be right, but that didn’t stop two parents from West
Kensington from creating a £1m nightclub underneath their London home for their
daughter and her friends.
Home Gyms
Gyms can be intimidating at the best of times. Not just that,
but for those who are restricted by work, long commutes, or family commitments–
they can be nigh impossible to get to. The solution many have found to get
sufficient exercise, while meeting the rest of their commitments is to build a
home gym within their new basement conversion. There’s no need to stress
getting to the gym when it your routine can take place just feet away from the
family. Plenty of homeowners are perfectly comfortable inviting their personal
trainer, or gym instructor round to coach their session without having to worry
about leaving the children at home, or with a nanny while they are at the gym.
But why?
What does it all boil down to?
The two most compelling reasons to get a basement conversion
are often; value for money and longevity.
A basement conversion can add significant value onto the
property when developed correctly. In the current housing market, any foothold
one can get over the competition is a welcome one – even if it means finding
the funds for the initial cost of the conversion. If planned correctly with one
of the many design and build companies in
London, the initial cost will serve as nothing more than a deposit and can
sometimes be repaid twice over on the value of the property.
That, for many, comes secondary to the knowledge that they
have created a gorgeous, relaxing space that their family can use for many
happy years to come. A space that offers freedom from the fight for room above
ground, that they can use for whatever they choose.
